NEWCASTLE has earned a place in motor racing fans’ hearts just days after hosting its first event.
The city’s maiden race was named the fan’s choice for best Supercars event at the sport’s Gala Awards on Monday night.
The race, which Supercars estimates brought 190,000 fans to the track, ended with dramatic scenes as Jamie Whincup claimed his record seventh title.
Whincup was officially named Supercars champion at the award, also taking out the driver’s driver award.
Ford was named champion manufacturer of the year, with Scott McLaughlin’s Shell V-Power Racing named champion team and best presented team – fans’ choice.
McLaughlin himself also claimed most popular driver – fans’ choice.
