A FORMER Lake Macquarie gym instructor has been jailed for the large-scale supply of cocaine and a drug known as MDA.
Steve Anthony Gavin, of Sunshine, was sentenced in Newcastle District Court on Friday, alongside his co-accused, Jarrod James Coughtrie, who was caught with nearly $100,000 of cocaine in his car on September 22 last year.
The public gallery was filled with a large group of supporters for both men.
The court heard Gavin, who was well-known in Morisset through his gym, experienced a marriage breakdown and became depressed before police seized the cocaine and nearly 2.5kg of MDA last year.
Coughtrie’s legal team argued their client’s involvement was a “one-off” assistance for a mate.
Gavin was sentenced to a maximum seven-and-a-half years in jail with a non-parole period of four-and-a-half-years, while Coughtrie was sentenced to three years and nine months behind bars with a non-parole period of two years.
The pair waved and blew kisses to their supporters as they were led to the courthouse cells.
