A man who was pulled, unconscious, from the surf at a popular Newcastle beach on Thursday remains in a critical condition in hospital.
Lifeguards retrieved the Merewether man, 67, after he was seen floating face-down in the water, about 20 metres from the shore at Dixon Park Beach, at about 10.15am.
The man’s heart had stopped, but lifeguards administered CPR until paramedics arrived and gave the unconscious man adrenaline and managed to restart his heart.
He was taken to hospital where he was placed in intensive care.
A John Hunter Hospital spokesman told the Newcastle Herald on Friday that the man remained in a critical condition.
