ABOUT a hundred people were evacuated from Marketown on Thursday afternoon as a fire broke out in a unit above the shopping centre.
Firefighters were called to the Spire Apartments on Ravenshaw Drive, Newcastle West, about 4pm after reports a fire broke out on the balcony of a unit on the sixth floor.
The fire was contained to one unit which received minor damage.
One woman, the occupant of the unit who recently had a baby, was taken to hospital with minor burns.
Newcastle City detectives were investigating the cause of the fire which on Thursday evening remained undetermined.
Residents of the unit block were allowed back in a short time later.
The fire prompted a large response from authorities if only because of concern it would spread.
