When Joel Colvin told his mates he’d be hanging out with Nitro Circus stars at Mayfield Skate Park, they didn’t believe him.
Joel, 12, won a Nitro Circus competition in which entrants had to nominate a place in Newcastle to hang out.
Joel, of New Lambton Heights, nominated Mayfield Skate Park.
Three Nitro stars – Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham, James Foster and Kurtis Downs joined Joel and his mates at the skate park on Monday.
Joel summed up the experience in two words: “So good”.
“They’re my idols.”
Fotheringham, who does flips in his wheelchair in the Nitro show, said he loved meeting fans.
“Without our fans, we wouldn’t have our show and we wouldn’t be able to do what we love,” he said.
“To be a role model for some of these kids, it’s a cool feeling.”
Joel's uncle Peter Moss said it was “so special for professionals to come here to Mayfield Skate Park and meet 50 or so local kids”.
“They showed them tricks, signed autographs and let them have a ride on their bikes,” he said.
“It’s absolutely brilliant.”
Nitro Circus founder Travis Pastrana said it was “cool that we get to ride dirt bikes, scooters and bicycles around the world”.
“It’s so much fun for us, but to see smiles on kids’ faces and inspire them to get outside and keep riding and chase their dreams, it’s awesome,” he said.
Nitro Circus will perform at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on Saturday.
The event will feature the best athletes in FMX [Freestyle Motocross], BMX, scooter and inline skating.
