Loose & The Horny Chicks still have plenty to rock about

HALCYON DAYS: Local legends Loose & The Horny Chicks back in their late '90s prime.

LONG before the #MeToo movement or before Camp Cope were calling out inequality in the music industry, punk band Loose & The Horny Chicks were rattling the cage of gender politics in Newcastle.

Given the current political climate it seems fitting that the late ‘90s provocateurs are headed back for their first performance since 2014.

Loose & The Horny Chicks will headline an evening of girl rock mayhem at the Lass O’Gowrie Hotel on March 31, titled Same Ol Bullshit. The night also includes all-female punk bands Spam, Bitchcraft and Boudicca.

“We were the most basic punk you could imagine,” Loose bassist Amanda Roff said. “Like before you graduate to Lego, you have those giant Lego, Duplo. That was the kind of music it was.

“Three chords and very much short two-minute songs. Yelling opinions over basic chord progressions and just try and play as fast as possible.”

Yet the unisex band’s combination of punk guitars and a brass section, with frontwoman Mel McMillan’s uniquely Novocastrian lyrics, gave Loose & The Horny Chicks an edge.

“Mel expressed herself in a really straight-forward way, which was very much commentary on Newcastle from the point of view of a woman,” Roff said.

Roff, who was also a member of Bitchcraft, has spent the past 17 years living in Melbourne where she continues to work in the music industry. She is also writing a PhD on people’s personal relationships with music.

The rise of gender politics in modern music has particularly piqued her interest.

“I’m excited about the amount of gender politics that’s getting some air and some noise behind it, but we’ve basically been saying this for a long time,” she said.
