SECTIONS of Merewether will close or partially close to traffic from today as part of a $2.56 million project to upgrade the suburb’s streets.

Frederick Street will be shut southbound between Helen and Berner streets from Tuesday, with detours into Watkins Street and then John Parade.

Helen Street will shut at Watkins Street, with southbound detours along Watkins linking with John Parade.

There will be no on-street parking for the duration of the work. The footpath will remain open until the road and drainage work is done.

“These road closures will be in place for approximately eight weeks to enable road and drainage renewal works in Frederick Street as part of stage 1 of the Frederick Street rehabilitation project,” a council spokeswoman said.

Traffic controllers will be on the site on Tuesday night between 3pm and 8pm directing traffic and residents. “We will determine if any changes are required at this stage,” the spokeswoman said.

Resident access will be available northbound along Frederick Street. The council said residents had been advised of the planned road closures.

Stage One of the Frederick Street works, which also include relocating a water main from the street to below the western footpath area from Robert Street to Patrick Street, are estimated to cost $1.9 million. The council will add an avenue planting of coastal banksias as part of the works, a species of tree chosen by residents affected by the locations.
