HUNTER ACADEMY: Hunter hosts state’s elite academies

Over 4000 athletes, supporters, staff, volunteers and coaches attended the 2018 Your Local Club Academy Games at eight Hunter venues across the weekend. 

The Academy Games brings together all 11 Regional Academies of Sport (RAS) from across NSW. 

Officially declared open by Lord Mayor of Newcastle Nuatali Nelmes on Friday, with many notable dignitaries present including Scot Macdonald MLC, Samantha Poolman (GWS Giants Super Netballer), Scott Williams (Belmont 16s Chief Executive Officer and Clubs NSW State Councilor for Newcastle & Hunter), Brett O’Farrell (CEO HAS) and Ted Atchison OAM (Chairman HAS).

The Games featured 1300 athletes across eight sports including Basketball, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Softball, Surfing, AFL and Tennis. Male and female AFL tournaments, as well as Tennis, were included for the first time in many years.

The Hunter Academy of Sport had an extraordinary weekend, with the boys and girls Basketball teams coming out on top after very tight games against the Central Coast and Northern Inland. The HAS boys Hockey team also won the tournament.
