Newcastle Jets midfielder Dimi Petratos and former teammate Andrew Nabbout have been picked in an extended 32-man squad for the World Cup.
Selection in coach Bert van Marwijk's preliminary squad will be some consolation for 25-year-old Petratos after the disappointment of Saturday’s grand final loss to Melbourne Victory.
Petratos was joint runner-up behind Sydney FC’s Polish international Adrian Mierzejewski in the A-League player of the year award, the Johnny Warren Medal.
Winger Nabbout was instrumental in the Jets’ record-breaking season before moving to Japanese giants Urawa Red Diamonds in March.
Both players made their Socceroos debuts in a 4-1 loss to Norway on March 24 in Oslo.
Veteran striker Tim Cahill won a place in the extended World Cup squad, as did exciting Melbourne City 18-year-old Daniel Arzani.
The squad will be cut to 26 next week before a training camp in Turkey and friendlies in Austria and Hungary. Australia open the tournament in Russia against Franc e on June 16.
