WINNING SNAPPER Newcastle High School student Noah Dawson won the Year 9-10 division in the student section of the Moran Photographic Prize awarded this week. The prize (detail of his entry, shown above) is worth $3000 to Dawson and another $3000 to the school for arts development.

OLIVE TREE The popular Olive Tree Markets are at Maitland Regional Art Gallery on Saturday, May 12, from 9am to 2pm.

ARCHIBALD PRIZE As the 2018 Archibald Prize winner and finalists exhibition is unveiled at the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney, Newcastle Art Gallery is hosting the travelling exhibition of the 2017 Archibald Prize, opening this weekend. Entry fees apply.

THE BLOOM ROOM Artistic collaborators Geoffrey Datson and Annette Hughes of folk duo Datson+Hughes will perform tracks from their Flowers and the Axe album tour at 12pm and 1pm on Saturday, May 19, at Muswellbrook Regional Art Centre as part of an autumn arts experience, which also arts classes and complimentary food and wine.

HEART OPEN This innovative night of female-oriented female artists marks its fifth session on Monday, May 14, at the Clarendon Hotel. Featured artists from 7pm  include muso Su Morley, poet Gillian Swain, muralist Mel O’Dell and flow dancer Ifritah. There is an open mic session from 6.30pm. Comedy group Madame Speaker performs from 8.30pm. ($5 donation)

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP Applications for the 2018 Brenda Clouten Memorial Travelling Scholarships for Young Achievers in Visual Arts run by Maitland Regional Art Gallery close on June 8. The scholarship is worth $5000. Details at mrag.org.au
