Czech import Tomas Landa was inspirational for the Northstars on the weekend as Newcastle recorded an Australian Ice Hockey League clean sweep in Melbourne.
Landa was cut on his right cheek by the skate of an opposition player but after receiving stitches, and blood being cleared from the rink, he returned with a fresh jersey and face mask to complete Sunday’s game.
The Northstars defeated the Melbourne Mustangs 4-3 at O’Brien Group Arena. The visitors led 1-0 at the time of Landa’s incident, which occurred in the first of three periods.
In the second term Nick Riviat and Hamish Powell added to Sam Lawson’s earlier goal. Riviat’s second in the last period made it 4-2 with 11 minutes remaining.
Saturday’s double-header opener went down to the wire with the Northstars’ Robert Haselhurst netting a buzzer beater in a 5-4 thriller against defending champions the Melbourne Ice at the same venue.
Joe Harcharik scored a hat-trick, featuring his 100th league goal.
These results see Newcastle jump from last to fifth on the competition ladder.
