Rory Walker scored a second-half double as Norths claimed top spot on the Hunter Coast Premier Hockey League competition ladder.

Walker netted Sunday’s match-winner at Newcastle International Hockey Centre with eight minutes left to leapfrog now second-placed opponents Wests on the overall standings.

The 3-2 victory for Norths, combined with Souths’ 2-1 upset of visiting reigning premiers Gosford on Sunday, means three points separate the top five teams.

Tom Duck and Luke Witchard were the goal scorers for fifth-placed Souths. Jake Wigham converted for Gosford, who slip to third.

Elsewhere in round eight and Sam Coonan scored two for The Entrance in a 5-0 success against winless University at Wyong on Sunday. Maitland had the bye.

Meanwhile, Norths player Ky Willott was named player of the tournament at the Under-18 NSW State Championships after helping steer Newcastle to a 4-0 final triumph over North West Sydney at Bathurst on Sunday.

LADDER: Norths 10; Wests 9; Gosford, Maitland 8; Souths 7; The Entrance 4; University 0.
