The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is responsible for ensuring individuals and businesses comply with Australian competition, fair trading, and consumer protection laws – in particular the Competition and Consumer Act 2010.

This month the ACCC was successful in an action against Hewlett-Packard Australia (HP). HP sold about 220,000 printers with technology that turned off support for non-HP cartridges, installed either at the time of manufacturing or via a software update to older printers. HP failed to inform customers of the restriction.

The ACCC obtained a court-enforceable undertaking from HP to compensate customers by payment of $50 each to customers who couldn't use their printers with non-HP cartridges.

A list of the affected printers is on the HP website, where customers will also find the relevant claim form. The offer expires on August 13, 2018.
