HogWatts is returning to 48 Watt Street in Newcastle. And what better venue than a former church to bring the magic of Harry Potter to life?
The Harry Potter series is a worldwide phenomenon loved by people of all ages. HogWatts is a culinary celebration of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and all its weird and wonderful characters.
Last year’s events attracted people aged from five to 50 attending and this year’s events are almost sold out. Book now to secure your seat at one of four long tables under house banners and a starry sky.
“Seeing the wonder in people’s eyes when they entered the hall last year was pure magic,” venue owner Jonathan Coleman told Food & Wine.
The menu, styled on the traditional hearty fare eaten at wizarding feasts from the books, is designed to be shared with those around you.
“The descriptions of food in the books brings a magical touch to the sound of meat and potatoes. While we can’t do any magic, oversized legs of lamb, whole chickens, platters of potatoes and vegetables will be the starting point for our menu design,” Coleman said.
“For dessert we hope to bring some favourites to the table like rock cakes, sherbet lemon and cockroach clusters with a bit of treacle tart or apple pie to fill you up. Butter beer will be on tap for young and old.”
Five characters from the books will host the evening, bringing the unpredictable and unexpected to HogWatts.
“With totally hands-on and immersive roles throughout the event guests can chat, photograph, dance or maybe even perform with some of the most loved and feared professors and lords,” Coleman said.

Fawk Foods news
There’s lots of news coming from Frank Fawkner’s EXP. restaurant at Pokolbin. Firstly, congratulations to Fawkner and Ben Devlin for the recent EXP. and Paper Daisy collaboration. Each dish was clever and thought provoking, and many a conversation was had as it was being served.
Fawkner is “EXP.anding” his Fawk Foods range and will launch Fawk Foods Kitchen & Bakery in Pokolbin village opposite Hope Estate in July. It will be open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. More details to come.
Also, Fawkner revealed on social media last week that his sous chef, Joshua Gregory, had been named in Foodservice Australia’s “30 Under 30 Class of 2018”. The official announcement will be made at an awards night on May 27.
And, last but not least, EXP’s a la carte menu is back – and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Diners now have the option of two or three courses as well as the EXP.erience tasting menu. Think haloumi, potato and native spice curry with peas, verbena and roti; Warroo kangaroo, butternut pumpkin, saltbush and macadamia; or sweet potato and mandarin sorbet with native thyme and barbequed mandarin.
Hoagie hip hop
Hip Hop Bingo returns to Newcastle Hotel on May 24, organised by Nicholas Brady and the Hotline Hoagies team. The last event raised more than $300 for Lifeline Hunter Central Coast and this time Brady hopes to double that.
“It’s basically bingo but with music,” he explained. “Players get bingo cards with hip-hop songs listed. If they hear a song on their sheet they mark it off. Once they get a line: bingo.”
All profits from ticket sales are again being donated to Lifeline Hunter Central Coast’s crisis support and suicide prevention services.
The good folk at Mister P’s Burger Bar will be closing the doors to their second Charlestown restaurant soon. Their pop-up lease on Pearson Street expires soon and they need customer support to secure a permanent home. This husband and wife-run business makes a good burger – from scratch – and are gluten-free friendly. Go on, show them some love.

Lotus Express Vietnamese Street Eats is opening at Marketown in Newcastle West “soon”, say the owners of Pearl Nails, Glendale. They have described it as their “newest business venture” and it will serve pho, banh mi, rice paper rolls, vermicelli noodle bowls and more made from “family recipes”.
Moreish Mystery Mondays happens every Monday night from 5pm at Newcastle’s Commonwealth Hotel. Three courses plus bread costs $29 and the chefs are in complete control – each course is a mystery until it is served to your table. For the less adventurous, the regular menu is still available.
Newcastle burger joint Rascal is now open on Monday nights until 9pm, and have just released a new menu. “It’s not a revolution, just an evolution. Rascal has been so well received that we didn’t want to change things up too much. New additions include American-style waffles, a new double bacon cheeseburger and two new chicken burgers – Mad Dog Tannen and Danny Trejo,” Ty Burford said.
Rascal is also collaborating with Dylan Abdoo and Elle Brown from Newcastle Greens for a new burger which uses their award-winning micro greens.
