Newcastle detectives call for more public help in Mayfield West shooting investigation

Detectives investigating a shooting in Mayfield West late last month are closing in on answers as to how a man in his 20s ended up with a bullet wound to the leg.

But investigators attached to Strike Force Calfs still want anyone in the community with information about the April 30 incident at Buruda Street to contact the detectives’ office at Newcastle Police Station.

The injured man was found about 5.30am after reports of the sound of gunfire.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition and treated for a wound to his thigh.

Police are keeping a lid on their lines of inquiry, but the Newcastle Herald understands they do not believe the incident has links to outlaw motorcycle gang activity or drugs.

Nor is it believed to be linked with another shooting last week, which took place at Edgeworth, and also left a man with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Information can also be reported anonymously through the Crime Stoppers hotline – 1800 333 000.
