Police have released a CCTV image after a family was approached by a man at a Central Coast shopping centre.

About 11.30am on Wednesday a woman was with her two three-year-old daughters in a shopping centre on Terrigal Drive, Erina, when they were approached by a man.

The man made inappropriate comments towards the girls before briefly following them within the shopping centre.

The incident was later reported to police from Brisbane Water Police District.

Investigators have released images of a man who may be able to assist with inquiries.

He is described as Caucasian appearance, average build, aged in his 50s, with grey hair and a moustache, and wearing dark coloured pants, a grey coloured zip jumper, red cap, reading glasses.

He was carrying a purple coloured Aldi bag, a white plastic bag and an umbrella.
