The Newcastle Northstars suffered their heaviest loss of the 2018 season in what was a mixed double header at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on the weekend.
The hosts were thumped 8-2 by second-placed Perth Thunder on Sunday following a 5-2 victory against the Melbourne Mustangs on Saturday.
Newcastle remain third on the Australian Ice Hockey League ladder.
After a goalless first term on Sunday, the Northstars conceded five goals in the second despite opening the account courtesy of Shane Southwood. It was 7-1 to Perth before Zane Jones netted Newcastle’s second.
The Northstars’ previous worst defeat this campaign was 8-3 against leaders the Brave in Canberra on May 5.
Saturday’s outcome was much better for the home side with Jones bagging a double inside two periods.
Nick Rivait made it 3-0 going into the third term, but Melbourne reduced the margin to one with back-to-back goals at Warners Bay.
Joe Harcharik and Richie Tesarik then put the result beyond doubt for Newcastle.
Next up the Northstars face the Bears in Sydney on Saturday.
