Butter Fish Services is a proudly Aboriginal owned and operated NDIS provider. 

They work with NDIS participants, both Aboriginal and non Aboriginal, to find the right supports and services. 

The organisation takes its name from the Aboriginal totem of managing director Don MacAskill, who before founding Butter Fish Services, was CEO of Endeavour Group Australia and before that, CEO of Awabakal.

“Butter Fish Services specialises in Aboriginal care with culturally appropriate support, but we also embrace diversity and will support anyone with an NDIS plan,” Mr MacAskill said.

“What we do different is, we take the time to listen to a person's story and what they need. Then we match support staff to best suit the client.

“This gives NDIS customers control and choice, allowing them to decide how to roll out their plan and what their supports will look like.”

Butter Fish Services was founded in November 2016 and has grown organically with a mix of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff, servicing customers throughout the Hunter including Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Cessnock, Kurri Kurri and up to Singleton.

“The spirit of NDIS is about empowering individuals, be they Aboriginal or members of the wider community,” Mr MacAskill said.  “Butter Fish Services is person-centred and outcome-focused. We want to help each client set goals and provide them with the right supports to achieve their goals. 

What we do different is, we take the time to listen to a person's story and what they need.

“To do that, we regularly seek feedback so that we are accountable, and providing appropriate services and supports.”

One of Mr MacAskill’s greatest frustrations in the early days of NDIS was that customers were saying ‘this is what I want’, but organisations were saying ‘this is what we’re prepared to give’.

“Butter Fish Services champions control, choice, and innovation, in the true spirit of the NDIS, so that customers have a much more richer and diverse pool of supports to choose from,” Mr MacAskill said.

“That’s what being person-centred is all about.”
