THE state government has been accused of hiding behind “a cloak of secrecy” at the expense of vulnerable children in withholding a “damning” report on the out-of-home care system.

Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services, Tania Mihailuk, said David Tune’s independent review was only made public after an Upper House censure motion compelled the NSW Government to release it. It showed record levels of kids in out-of-home care, which was increasing at a faster rate than the population of NSW children.

“Minister Goward continues to preside over a system failing to achieve adequate outcomes for vulnerable children caught in a vicious circle,” she said. “They’re stuck in care for longer periods and with devastating consequences.

“Why did the government use taxpayer’s funds to commission a report into a broken child protection system only to do everything possible to bury the findings. It’s grossly irresponsible and the Minister should be stood aside.”
