Newcastle’s Katie-Rae Ebzery is part of a new-look Australian Opals team which will head to China for a four-nation tournament next month to prepare for September’s Women’s World Cup.
Australia will be without several WNBA players for the July 9-22 competition, which will be a crucial trial for the World Cup team selected in late August.
Australia, the world No.4, will take on Serbia (No.8) in a rematch of the Rio Olympics quarter-final which the Opals lost. They also play China and Argentina in a six-game series.
“These games provide us with the opportunity to play three different styles which will be invaluable for our preparation,” coach Sandy Brondello said. “Every game we have from now until the World Cup is extremely important as it allows us to continue to work on our chemistry, style of play and culture.”
Eight members of the Opals side which won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games will return. They include Rio Olympians Ebzery, Tessa Lavey, Nicole Seekamp and Ezi Magbegor.
The team is: Stephanie Blicavs, Katie-Rae Ebzery, Darcee Garbin, Kelsey Griffin, Alice Kunek, Tessa Lavey, Tess Madgen, Ezi Magbegor, Lauren Mansfield, Jenna O’Hea, Nicole Seekamp, Tahlia Tupaea.
