A developer has lodged plans for an indoor swimming pool at Fletcher to cater for one of Newcastle’s population growth areas.

The $2.5 million swim centre in Kurraka Drive will include a 25-metre heated pool, 21 parking spaces and a cafe.

A spokesman for Hunter developer Mars Building said the project fitted in with the company’s long-term strategy to provide health and community facilities during the city’s housing boom.

“It will provide somewhere for young kids in the area to learn to swim,” the spokesman said.

The nearest pool is 4km away at Wallsend, although this is closed in winter. West Wallsend’s year-round pool is almost 10km away.

The proposed pool is next door to a medical centre and childcare centre and across the road from Fletcher Community Centre.

Mars said it hoped to open the pool at the end of next year.

Detailed plans are on public display at Newcastle City Council in King Street until July 20.
