The Hunter’s coastline became a surfer’s paradise across the weekend and again on Monday with picture postcard sets breaking up to 500 metres off shore.

A large southerly swell combined with a fresh south-westerly to produce waves of up to three metres at some beaches. The Herald’s Coastlines correspondent Dave  Anderson snapped this piece of the action from Hickson Street, Merewether on Monday morning.

“It was one of the those classic, cold winter mornings where all of the conditions combined to produce some great conditions,” Mr Anderson said.

From the inexperienced to the elite ranks of Ryan Callinan and Jackson Baker, the conditions attracted surfers like moths to a flame.

“A few blokes got cleaned up off Merewether reef,” Mr Anderson said.

“We said it was only for experienced surfers and a few of them learnt the hard way.”

The swell is expected to drop off as the week goes on with 1.5 metre swells predicted by Wednesday.

Newcastle is due to reach a top of 17 degrees on Tuesday.
