DISABILITY crusador Lloyd Valentine has won one of the four key awards at the Newcastle Business Club’s 43rd annual awards.
NBC president Holly Martin said the winners of this year’s awards were “great examples of people and businesses that truly want to see Newcastle and the Hunter shine,”
“The contribution of the winners to our community cannot be denied and it was a pleasure to be able to recognise them in front of a sold out crowd,” she said.
Mr Valentine, who experienced significant and debilitating health issues for many years, founded the Health Change Challenge, a community-engaging program for people with a disability and/or mental illness.
He was awarded the Club’s Youth Award for his commitment to the commonweal of the Hunter “through his passion for effecting positive change for local people with a disability”.
The Club’s Individual Award was given to CommBank executive Colin Law, who with his colleagues partnered with ConnectAbility to create the five-star dining event Wine and Dine for Disability. Mr Law was also the primary driver of the crowdfunding initiative to save the Surfest women’s competition.
Local advertising and content creation company Out of The Square Media won the Club’s organisation award and was cited for the passion it has demonstrated for Newcastle and the Hunter through self-funded projects that raise the profile and awareness of the region.
BHP executive Deirdra Tindale, also the NSW Co-chair of the Women in Mining Network, was named the Individual Diversity Champion in the Hunter Diversity Awards from The Equal Futures Project.
Ms Tindale, who was named the 2018 Gender Diversity Champion in NSW Mining, said she hoped that by the time her toddler daughter enters the workforce “there will no longer be a need to have ‘gender diversity’ on the agenda.”.
Multinational engineering firm AECOM, which has a base in Warabrook, was named the Diversity Champion – Organisation in the Hunter Diversity Awards.
The company was cited for its work in boosting gender diversity and workplace flexibility as part of its diversity and inclusion strategy.
“AECOM’s flexible work practices aren’t just written in policy with a recent survey indicating that 91% of Hunter staff were working flexibly,” the Club said.
