Man charged over alleged sexual assault of a woman, and assault of a man, at Jindabyne

A man has been charged over the alleged sexual assault of a woman and the assault of a man in the Snowy Mountains last week.

About 1.30am on Thursday, July 5, officers from Monaro Police District were contacted following reports a 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man had been assaulted on Kosciuszko Road, Jindabyne.

Police will allege in court the pair were walking along the footpath after leaving a nearby licensed premises when they were approached by a man who punched the 25-year-old man in the head, rendering him unconscious, before physically and sexually assaulting the woman.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the pair at the scene for serious facial injuries before taking them to hospital for further treatment. They have both since been released.

Detectives from State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad and Monaro Police District established Strike Force Buckeridge to investigate the incident.

Following extensive investigations, strike force detectives arrested a 28-year-old man outside a home unit at Jindabyne just after 9am on Tuesday.

Shortly after, a search warrant was executed at the unit, where investigators seized items relevant to the investigation, and cannabis.

The man, who is British National, was taken to Jindabyne Police Station and charged with aggravated sex assault – inflict actual bodily harm on victim, cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear at Queanbeyan Local Court tomorrow on Wednesday.

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
