MUSIC festival Under The Southern Stars is leaving Tuncurry this summer and settling in its new home at Westport Park in Port Macquarie.

In it’s inaugural year the festival lured Jimmy Barnes and ex-Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora to its stage and this summer’s line-up is looking even better.

Headlining the January 27 show will be ’80s rock icons The Hoodoo Gurus, alongside ’90s indie heroes You Am I, Eskimo Joe, The Superjesus, British India, The Getaway Plan and Scott Darlow. Tickets are on sale from July 20.

RAAVING SELL OUT

RAAVE Tapes set out to prove the Newcastle live music scene was in healthy shape, and they emphatically proved it last Saturday night.

The sold-out signs went up just prior to Raave Tapes’ headline performance as 800 punters turned out for their ambitious Shut Down The Cambridge mini-festival, that also included Vacations, Grace Turner, Press Club and Haiku Hands.

“We never thought we’d sell it out,” Raave Tapes manager Ben Cooper said.

DEMI FLOWS ON

FOLLOWING a successful $5000 crowd-funding campaign to realise her vinyl dreams, Newcastle singer-songwriter Demi Mitchell is ready to release her second album The Overflow on July 30.

Mitchell has already given fans a taste of her dreamy and bluesy indie on the singles Medicine Woman and Man Of My Mind and you can watch an exclusive performance at The Tailor’s Workshop cafe of her unreleased track Fiction From Fact on the latest Herald Sessions video at theherald.com.au.

Mitchell will launch The Overflow at Maitland’s Grand Junction Hotel on August 3 and Newcastle’s Coal and Cedar on August 29.

WELLS LAUNCH

YOU only ever get one debut album, so you’ve got to launch it with pizzazz. That’s the attitude of Maitland folk-rock musician Dave Wells.

On August 31 Wells will launch his self-titled debut with a special performance at 48 Watt Street, with support from As Of Sky and a live Q&A about the record hosted by author and journalist Nick Milligan.

Wells’ album features live favourites Run Free and Picasso’s Cloud.

MORGAN’S KISS OFF

MOUNT Hutton-bred country star Morgan Evans is returning home from Nashville in September for three shows, but Newcastle isn’t on the itinerary.

If you want to catch the former Warners Bay High student on his Kiss Somebody tour you’ll need to trek down to Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory on September 5.

Irish country-pop singer-songwriter, Catherine McGrath is joining Morgan as the support.
