Newcastle Coles worker threatened with syringe, man charged over robbery

A supermarket worker was threatened with a syringe and a nearby jewellery store was robbed in Newcastle overnight.

Just before 1.30am Wednesday a man entered Coles on King Street, and allegedly threatened a female employee.

He demanded cash and cigarettes before jumping the counter and taking four mobile phones.

The man fled and police were notified.

Just before 3.45am, a man allegedly smashed the front window of a jewellery shop on Kenrick Street, The Junction, before taking several pieces of jewellery.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended both incidents and commenced inquiries.

About 5.30am, a 23-year-old man attended Newcastle Police Station and spoke with officers.

He was arrested and charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon, break and enter house and steal.

The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday.
