The mother of a 20-month-old Tarro toddler who died in June has been arrested and is expected to be charged with manslaughter.
Police arrested Jessica Greatorex, 22, at a Tarro address on Friday morning in relation to the death of Hayley Rose Banister on June 19.
She was taken to Maitland Police Station, where Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Walpole of the Homicide Squad said manslaughter charges were underway.
It comes after Timothy Andrew Whiteley, 26 was charged with murder on August 3 in relation to Hayley’s death. He was refused bail in Maitland Local Court on Wednesday to appear in Newcastle Local Court on October 3.
Chief Inspector Walpole said on Friday the little girl suffered “significant horrific injuries”.
“All murders have impacts, but certainly the murder of a 20-month-old baby certainly magnifies the effect on officers,” he said.
“As I said previously, a number of the officers on this investigation have very young children themselves, so there is impact, but they have to get on with the job.”
Chief Inspector Walpole said the investigation into the child’s death was still ongoing.
