Health and Fitness: Wollombi Wild Ride and Maitland Triathlon coming up

If you were one of the 80,000-plus who took part in the SunHerald City2Surf yesterday, you are probably feeling a sense of accomplishment after training hard through the winter months.

But you might also be wondering, what’s next?

I am not sure of the science behind it, but that feeling of achievement and accomplishment generally translates into a feeling of, what else could I do?

This goes for newcomers and diehards.

The good news is there are plenty of local events coming up if you are looking for your next focus, or perhaps your new focus if your winter has been a three-month hibernation.

I was talking to Paul Humphreys, from HEvents, during the week and there are plenty of dates coming up to work towards.

And if you are not one for running, or are looking to get the family active, the Wollombi Wild Ride is coming up on September 1.

Paul told me participation numbers are up for mountain biking and Ebikes are becoming popular. Ebikes are bikes with an electric motor that kicks in when you want it to.

“Ebikes are the next big thing in cycling,” Paul said. “They are becoming very popular because they make it easier for people who can’t get up really steep hills. If you are using an Ebike you obviously can’t win an event but it means more people, and people who aren’t as fit, can get involved.”

There are three distances for the Wollombi Wild Ride – 58 kilometres for the diehards plus a 30km course and a flat 13.5km.

"The family race has proven popular,” Paul said. “It's 13.5km and quite easy. It goes through some bush and a few paddocks and isn’t hilly. It’s also popular because it's Father's Day so the family can come out and camp and make a weekend out of it.

“It's also something that families can do together that’s a bit easier than running 10km.”

The courses are not very technical and are mostly on fire trails and gravel roads around the Wollombi and Laguna area.

HEvents have also added the Mongrel Classic this year. It is also a mountain bike riding event and will be staged at Richmond Vale on October 20. 

“The Wollombi Wild Ride is a lot of fire trail whereas the Mongrel Classic is on single track, which is a bit like trail running,” Paul said. “It's a harder one but there is a short and mid distances as well. 

“The short course is 12km and basically within a 2km zone of the rail museum, so families and kids will be able to do it. The full course is 60km and pretty serious.”

In the middle is a half distance of 30km.

The Maitland Triathlon also returns this year. It will be held at Morpeth on November 4 and is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

It returned after an absence last year with only one event but in 2018 there will be a sprint, Olympic and middle distance.

There is also a 10km run with a relay option and, with the event still 12 weeks away, there is plenty of time to train.

Lake Macquarie Running Festival, Warners Bay, August 26: Held on the shores of Lake Macquarie, there is a 21.1km half marathon course, a 10.5km fun run and 4km kids’ scamper.

Wollombi Wild Ride, Wollombi, September 1: Celebrating its 10th year, this cross country mountain bike event features a 58-kilometre challenge for the diehards plus 30km and 13.5km courses.

Maitland Triathlon, Morpeth, November 4: This event returned to the community calendar last year after an absence and was 12 weeks away yesterday. It is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and offers three distances.

Winter Warmers Week #1

Three are two-and-a-half weeks until spring and it is getting lighter earlier each morning, so make the most of it to hit spring flying.

This cardio workout comprises two parts. It can be done at the gym or outdoors. Adjust your workout, depending on your fitness level, grab a buddy to motivate each other and add a warm-up and cool-down.

Run 2 minutes, walk 1 min (reverse if you need a longer break or make the run a faster walk and slower walk as recovery). Repeat 4 times. Then ride, row or skip 45 seconds easy: 15 sec hard; 30 easy: 30 hard; 15 easy: 45 hard; 1min recovery. Repeat twice.
