Master Cessnock jockey Robert Thompson’s prediction came true when he scored his fifth Cairns Cup (2100 metres) win on Saturday.
Thompson rode the Janel Ryan-trained We Just Love It to a narrow victory in the $100,000 feature at Cannon Park.
The 60-year-old hoop settled We Just Love back in the field from barrier 12 and timed his charge to perfection to edge Multifacets at the post.
The win in the last race came after close losses on Centre Red, Tecza, Lushan and Hunter Caulfield at the meeting for Thompson, who has become a regular visitor to the far north Queensland carnival.
“I didn’t know if I’d won or not but deep down I thought I did,” Thompson told Sky Racing.
“But I’ve been beaten all day in photo finishes so I wasn’t sure, but my number went up first, so I was pretty happy.”
It was Thompson’s fifth victory in the cup since 2012 and one he tipped to good friend and former jockey Ron Ryan, the husband of trainer Janel.
“Ron and I planned this 12 months ago,” he said.
“I won on this little horse on Cairns Amateur Day and I said this is our next Cairns Cup horse, and everything has come off great.”
Thompson had a double on the Ryan-trained Binary and Our Atom a week earlier at Cairns and he will return on September 8 for the $100,000 Cairns Amateur Cup (2100m).
