SHE’s the “skin strategist” to Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama but as a mum-of-three Jennifer Brodeur also gets that some women don’t have the money or time for an indulgent beauty routine.

Mrs Brodeur, in Newcastle this weekend to deliver a skincare “masterclass” in Cooks Hill, has simple advice for that cohort.

“The number one thing is get as much sleep as you can because sleep is when the body hydrates itself and it will lower [skin] inflammation,” she says. “And you should be cleaning your face everyday; so many women go to bed without taking their makeup off.”

Mrs Brodeur is visiting Newcastle at the invitation of Darby Street skincare salon Skintifix, which offers treatments using the MAX+ LED Light Therapy device that Ms Brodeur developed in 2003 and is now used in more than 40 countries.

The former biology teacher says the “non-invasive” device “helps the body’s own innate ability to heal itself, like photosynthesis”.

Her global business JB Skin Guru extols organic skincare products and her clients include Mrs Obama and Oprah, who she sees monthly to analyse their skin and plan their “skin strategy” for their hectic schedules. Both women, she says, are “strong, graceful and very generous with their knowledge and advice”.

In the #metoo era, she says, women are wiser to beauty industry claims. She doesn’t believe in anti-aging products: “If that were true, we'd all look like we were five.”

Many women fixate on wrinkles but should be looking at the “big picture” of sleep, diet and lifestyle to look their best: “In the end, the most beautiful thing a woman can wear is happiness, when women are happy, that’s what we see.”
