NEWCASTLE’S music scene created a buzz last week at Brisbane’s BigSound and plans are building to make even greater noise next year.
For the first time Newcastle’s held it’s own Big Newy Sound showcase within the BigSound festival, which attracts the best emerging talent from across Australia, as well as industry figures such as record labels, managers, media and promoters.
Local artists Belle Badi, dave and Fritz performed at the first Big Newy Sound last Thursday, with attracted a capacity crowd to Ric’s Big Backyard.
Big Newy Sound organiser and music manager Sara Martin said all three acts caught the attention of record labels and promoters, particularly dave.
“We got a lot of feedback about the flow of it,” Martin said. “Everyone was wanting to know about Newcastle.”
Next year Martin plans to organise a Big Newy Sound in Newcastle prior to BigSound. She hopes this could involve a festival of local music spread across venues like the Cambridge, Lass O’Gowrie, Wickham Park Hotels and the Small Ballroom.
“We’re in talks about having it a few weeks before, a Big Newy Sound here and having a competition so people can apply for spots [for BigSound],” she said.
“The exposure is so huge if you’re a band.”
