Newcastle hockey player Ky Willott has been called up to debut for the senior NSW men’s team this weekend.
The Floraville 17-year-old features in a 14-man Waratahs squad named to play against Tasmania in Hobart on Sunday, marking round two of the Australian Hockey League.
He will be one of four players making their maiden appearances for the state side, joining Tom Brown, Sam Gray and Daine Richards.
NSW lost their tournament opener 6-4 to Queensland in Sydney on Saturday and are now missing several Kookaburras on national duty, including Willott’s former Norths clubmate Matt Dawson.
He also received player of the tournament and players’ player accolades after touring South Africa with the Australian Schoolboys in July.
In the NSW women’s team, former Souths player and Rio Olympian Mariah Williams comes back for the Arrows against Tasmania in Hobart on Saturday following an injury lay-off from the representative ranks. NSW beat Queensland 5-3 in round one of the Australian Hockey League in Sydney on Saturday.
Both of the NSW squads travel to Canberra for round three encounters on October 20 before finals take place on the Gold Coast from October 25 to 28.
