There’s nothing quite like the sound of a V8 Supercar engine as it roars down the straight at top speed. It’s a sound set to bring thousands of people to the region when the Newcastle 500 rolls into town this month.
The maiden Newcastle 500 drew over 190,000 people over three days, making it the biggest sports event in the city's history. This year’s event is expected to be even bigger. The tourism injection alone is expected to be around $20 million.
It’s all part of the growing economic diversity of the Hunter. While the V8 supercars thunder out of pit lane at the end of November, the coal ships will continue to make their way into the Port of Newcastle to load our high quality coal and transport it around the globe. This is the true nature of sustainable long-term economic diversity. Effective diversification means growing an economy through new opportunities and activities while building on the strengths and advantages that already exist.
