Lambton High School’s under-15 girls basketball team won the NSW Combined High Schools competition last week in climatic fashion in the grand final.
Held at Terrigal over two days, the knockout finals had the eight best teams in the state facing off from quarter-final stage.
Lambton avoided the dedicated sports high schools, beating Katoomba High first and then smashing Asquith Girls in the semi-finals.
The side then defeated Queanbeyan’s Karabar High School in the grand final 62-59, after trailing by seven points at the end of the third quarter. The girls went on a 17-7 run in the fourth quarter to claim the victory.
Coached by Mr Ahmad, the team consisted of Ashley Crossan, Chyra Evans, Charli Sutherland, Meghan Steele, Eloise Steele, Kayla Stokes, Laura Davies, Kelsey Crossan and Mia Reilly.
DIOCESE COMPETES AT OLYMPIC PARK
The NSW PSSA Athletics Championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park last week with a host of athletes from the Hunter competing.
More than 25 Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle students represented Polding over two days.
Anita Olie from St Joseph’s East Maitland was outstanding in the 9yrs 100m, qualifying for the semi final and then claiming a bronze medal with a time of 14.37.
Ashlyn wall from Our Lady of Lourdes Tarro qualified for the 8-10 yrs 800m final and finished a well placed sixth.
Poppy Doran from St Joseph’s Charlestown finished seventh in the senior 800m, while Tamara Redcliffe from our Lady of Lourdes made the final for the 13yrs 100m.
