Lake Macquarie BMX Club rider Miller Ruks competed for Australia in a unique Trans-Tasman contest in New Zealand late last month.
The one-of-a-kind age event pitted the best four 11-year-old boys and four 11-year-old girls from both countries against each other in a team contest that differs from the standard individual competition format of BMX racing.
Ruks and his teammates were billeted out with New Zealand families for the week without their parents.
The had to travel, train and do leisure activities as part of the team, which included doing such activities as horse riding, luge, and a series of Maori cultural experiences.
Five races were held in the competition and the team with the most overall points across the races claimed the title.
Ruks team missed out on the title but the girls team took victory.
He had it tough as the the No.1 rider on the boys team and was taken out in the first two races.
Ruks, the 2018 Australian BMX National Series champion for his age, will return to action when Lake Macquarie BMX Club host the first round of the NSW State Series on February 3.
