Jenna Kingsley broke her W-League goalscoring drought as the Jets overpowered winless Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0 at Marconi Stadium on Saturday night.
Kingsley produced a bucketload of goals to be the Herald Women’s Premier League leading scorer in winter but had not found the back of the net in the women’s domestic competition since the opening round of last season.
The 26-year-old always looked likely against the Wanderers though, dangerously combining with Cortnee Vine and Katie Stengel in the first half before finally breaking the deadlock in the 59th minute.
Newcastle, who moved to six points and into third place with the victory, had been applying plenty of pressure for no joy when they were finally rewarded for their efforts.
A back pass under pressure was poorly cleared by Wanderers goalkeeper Jada Mathyssen-Whyman. The ball fell to Stengel, whose shot copped a deflection from a Western Sydney defender and sat up pretty for Kingsley to finish low and right with only the shot-stopper to beat.
The Jets will chase more points when they turn around to host Brisbane Roar at McDonald Jones Stadium on Thursday night.
