FAMILY AFFAIR Arrivederci Restaurant at The Junction is under new management after 35 years in the one family. But never fear – it’s in the hands of another member of the Palozzi family.
NAME CHANGE Next time you are at Poppy’s Home & Garden, on Oakdale Road at Gateshead, stop by Verandah Cafe Newcastle for a bite to eat. It’s open seven days (8am to 3.30pm), serves an impressive all-day breakfast menu, lunch and has a daily specials board. The name of the cafe has changed – ever so slightly – which confused Food & Wine who had for years erroneously referred to the cafe as Poppy’s. It was, in fact, previously called The Verandah. Sam Tsolakis, who owns The Village Newcastle on Beaumont Street in Hamilton, took over The Verandah in July. He now runs The Verandah Cafe Newcastle at Poppy’s, bringing with him years of hospitality experience.
Also, there are plenty of Christmas gift ideas to consider at Poppy’s Home & Garden (poppysgc.com.au).
BALLARAT GIN The Christmas spirit – no pun intended – is alive and well at Larrikin Gin. Food & Wine was sent a sample box recently and was pleasantly surprised by the four varieties. Scott Wilson-Browne and Chris Pratt started Larrikin Gin in 2016 – Ballarat’s first distillery since the 1930s. Prices range from $75 to $95.
NEW LOOK Newcastle’s 23hundred is closing briefly in early January for renovations.
GIFT IDEA Just Been Laid is launching gift vouchers in time for Christmas. The recipient can collect subscription eggs for three months from any of the collection points.
