There’s a familiar phrase quoted by Benjamin Franklin; ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’, it could perhaps, also be the mantra of Rod and Rose Murphy, founders of award-winning Newcastle based firm R&R Murphy.
Founded in 2004, Rod and his wife began the metal fabrication business and have, alongside their team, grown an impressive list of clients spanning the mining, defence, architecture and transport industries. This year they snagged the highly coveted award of Hunternet Port Waratah Coal Services Harvey Knox Award adding to his recent HMA awards. Rod says that much of the firms’ success is down to careful, yet deliberate planning.
“I’ve always believed in having a five year plan and investing in systems and facilities that give us the best competitive advantage,” he begins.
While the firm began servicing the mining industry, Rod was aware that diversifying the verticals that the company were equipped to assist was a strategy that would serve them well in the long term.
“Manufacturing has been fairly volatile all around the world and so at times when others may have been holding off hiring, or spending, we were investing in new equipment and machinery and upgrading our facilities to ensure the business stays robust.”
The metal fabrication experts now employ 24 people, primarily boiler makers but with an emphasis on expanding skills that encompass sheet metal and heavy fabrication so as to fulfill the varied work they are regularly tasked to complete.
Speaking of the company’s recent accolades, Rod said “To be honest when I saw the level of competition we were up against I didn’t think we would take out an award.
“It really is very humbling to be recognised among such strong contenders, for our work. It means a lot, we had a plan and achieved it.These awards give us credibility and respect in our industry and urge us to do more and keep raising the bar higher.”

2019 will see yet another new apprentice join the team and a new plan unfold to take the business to the next level. Rod says that while existing clients such as Boeing, BAE and Lockheed Martin will be priority, his sights are also firmly set on expanding business.
“Our focus is to nurture the clients we work with, grow the business, and tick off on our plan.”
