THE Department of Education will repay Salt Ash Public School for a $6000 water bill the primary school incurred due to the PFAS contamination scandal.
Port Stephens MP Kate Washington said the department on Wednesday agreed to pay the bill centrally from now on.
The cost rose after the Department of Defence refused to pay for the school’s water as it pays for red zone residences.
“After many setbacks, this is a small but significant win for the families in Salt Ash,” Ms Washington said.
The primary school had previously used its bore water connection.
Ms Washington said she had written to Defence urging them to take over payment from the education department.
“Having caused the contamination, Defence has agreed to pay the water bill for residential and business properties in the red zone for 3 years. They should pay the school’s water bill as well,” Ms Washington said.
