Newcastle’s already-thin attacking resources have been further depleted by a groin injury that has ruled marquee man Ronny Vargas out of Sunday’s clash with Brisbane at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Vargas finished Thursday’s training session early but was still considered a chance to take his place against the Roar, only for Newcastle to omit him from their preliminary 18-man squad as a precaution.
The Jets are already short-staffed up front because of the long-term suspension of Irish striker Roy O’Donovan and a broken foot that has sidelined young tyro Joey Champness.
Brazilian winger Jair missed last week’s 3-0 loss to Melbourne City with a hip problem and was again on restricted duties at training on Thursday, but he was named in Newcastle’s squad.
After scoring a club-record 59 goals en route to last season’s grand final, the Jets have struggled this season with five goals in their first six games.
Brisbane have named prolific striker Adam Taggart and Frenchman Eric Bautheac, despite both suffering injuries in last week’s loss to Adelaide.
