I THINK the churches and schools that have allowed sex crimes against children should also be on the sex offenders list.

JOHN Bonnyman of Fern Bay (Short Takes, 8/1): we in Newcastle also had approximately 50 per cent increase in our rates. The biggest winner seams to be our lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes. She received a $23,000 a year pay increase – $430 a week pay rise. To me this is over the top. So John, just keep an eye where the money goes.

CAN Tony Brown and other supporters kindly call it a night (‘Push to go bush’, Newcastle Herald, 9/1)? Then the rest of us can enjoy our lives in peace. It beggars belief that it’s easier to get a drink after midnight in Kuala Lumpur than in Newcastle.

RON Elphick, 250,000 or so generations of the original inhabitants of our continent? (Short Takes, 10/1). By my, conservative, reckoning that would take us back about 5 million years. I've told you a million times, don't exaggerate.

THE call for a statewide extension of the Newcastle-style lockouts comes on the back of the announcement from Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm of his intention quit federal politics (‘Push to go bush’, Herald, 9/1). The one-man-band leader of a libertarian “party” believes he can’t make a difference in the national parliament, but sees his role as dismantling NSW as a so-called nanny state. With the prospect of both Leyonhjelm and Latham sitting in the Upper House whoever forms government in March may have clowns to the left and jokers to the right.

JUST wondering if any work health and safety thought went into the decision by Lake Macquarie City Council to install a 12-metre stainless steel tower topped with “sails in a mirror finish to reflect the sky....." – a possible daytime hazard to air traffic (‘Council's $150k 'Chimera' sculpture, Herald, 10/1). To me that sounds akin to a light laser pointed skywards at night.

MR Steve Barnett is correct with his comment that the coking coal of the Hunter is of the highest quality, I'd say on a similar par with the fine white sand of Fingal Spit. I can envisage Mr Barnett returning home after a walk on Fingal beach bursting through the front door; whiting in one hand; flathead in the other and looking quite like frosty the snowman with flared nostrils. A sight to behold one would think.

IT’S about time Australians realised you earn everything; you deserve nothing.
