I THINK that Short Takes gives us the opportunity to vent our spleen, which is a good thing. No-one should take it too seriously. Those who wish to change the world order or rebel against greedy capitalists don't realise that without those who drive you to the point of rebellion you would have no purpose. So keep spending on your guilty pleasures, keep it secret from your rebellious comrades and rejoice in the fact that you have contributed to the system that gives you the right to be angry with the world that revolves around your participation or simply opt out all together. Cheers and happy New Year to all the hypocrites.

JUST to prove I'm not totally against Newcastle East action group, I would like to offer my opposition to the location of the proposed skate park and cafe at South Newcastle Beach. To those rocket scientists proposing this location, I suggest you take a walk along the Bathers Way from Bar Beach to Merewether. We walked along there on Saturday morning and the amount of sand that was on the footpath made it almost impossible to walk with any traction. This walkway is elevated and at least 30 metres from the actual sand at the closed point, and yet the council wants to put the park on the beach. I suggest you just upgrade the existing ramp or just abandon the project.

SO far, despite the disingenuous contention that "no" is not the answer to the pill-popping problem, nobody who has used that method has died as a result, or even become ill so far from digesting one - and it comes with a 100% guarantee. Looks like a winner to me.

WHAT are the chances the boys who will be boys meeting Jenny at the grocery store before they run to paradise on January 26 (“Choirboys set for Australia Day”, Newcastle Herald 5/1)?

WHAT have the Marsh brothers got to do to get axed? Is it a WA thing? And now they are in the OZ 50-over series with one as vice captain! The best hitters we have in the Big Bash League are D’Arcy, Short and Lyn. Surely they are worth a rise to the longer form? We have had two of the best number six bats of any country in Mike Hussey and Doug Walters. Anderson and Broad must be licking their lips in anticipation of next year’s Ashes series, as they beat India 3-1 easily.

LIGHT rail does not explain knocking Newcastle's ideally laid out / located station off global Sydney's train network, ("As good as gold?", Herald 5/1). For efficiency, look at stations elsewhere including in Sydney CBD, Sydney airport, North Sydney, Chatswood, St Leonards, Macquarie Park, Wolli Creek and others. They are all built over the tracks. 90-minute services with Sydney would develop Newcastle station vibrantly into its sensational surroundings. Money, money, money! At the dawn of battery powered trains and after 60 years, state governments still don't have a Midas touch when it comes to our public transport.
