After a weekend when fires burnt through Kooragang Island and at Fern Bay, rain was expected to fall across much of the Lower Hunter on Wednesday night.
The Fern Bay fire, which burnt to the edge of the Seaside Boulevard estate at the weekend, was contained after burning through 83 hectares since Saturday.
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will continue to patrol the Worimi Regional Park.
The fire at Kooragang Island burned through 102 hectares and is being patrolled Fire and Rescue NSW.
“People may still see some smoke from smoldering in small pockets,” a NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman said on Wednesday.
Rain was expected to fall over Newcastle on Wednesday night and the Bureau of Meteorology was predicting a 40 per cent chance of showers on Thursday, most likely in the late afternoon.
The weather on Friday and across the weekend is expected to be sunny with temperatures climbing into the mid to low 30s in both Newcastle and Maitland.
