More than twenty Indigenous young people took on the waves at Nobbys on Saturday to learn to surf. The class was part of a new initiative being rolled out by Awabakal Ltd that seeks to engage with a group of Novocastrians currently not using the Aboriginal controlled health service.
“Our new youth program is called Awabakal Strong. It’s going to focus on Indigenous youth of Newcastle,” community development youth worker Zoe Khan said.
“Statistics showed that there was a gap that didn’t use our local medical services. We want to focus on culture and identity, as well as mental health.”
Ms Khan said she believed 12 to 25-year-olds would be more likely to access services if they had attended the program’s activities, which will be held at schools and elsewhere.
“I think young people connect more with those people that are out there with them,” she said.
Awabakal will officially launch the new campaign in mid-February.
Another excursion to “Ninja Parc” will be held on Thursday.
