MAGGIE Rogers has a discovery story that sounds written for myth-making. Three years ago a video of Pharrell Williams being visibly moved by her song Alaska at a New York University masterclass went viral. It instantly put the Maryland-bred singer-songwriter on the radar of major labels.
After intense hype and hit singles Alaska and Fallingwater, Heard It In A Past Life is Rogers’ first major label album. It follows folkie independent LPs The Echo (2012) and Blood Ballet (2014).
Heard It In A Past Life sees a more polished Rogers, 24, who has tapped into electro-pop instrumentation to colour her folk song stories. Light On is a soaring slice of pop that competes with Adele’s best work, while The Knife has the swagger of The Arctic Monkeys’ AM period.
