Maybe the Australian Reptile Park at Somersby wasn’t the hottest place in Australia on Friday, but it was certainly hot enough for Hugo the tortoise to take a dip.
The 68-year-old Galapagos tortoise enjoyed being hosed down by head of reptiles Daniel Rumsey.
“In extremely hot weather, like we’ve been having, we have to look out for our animals. Ensure that they have enough water and plenty of shade,” Mr Rumsey said.
Temperatures in the Hunter soared for a third day on Friday with the mercury reaching 42 degrees at Cessnock, 36 degrees at Murrurundi Gap, 42 degrees at Scone, 38 degrees at Williamtown and 41 at Tocal. At Nobbys, the top temperature was 26 degrees.
Minimum overnight temperatures are expected to be slightly cooler over the next couple of nights, with minimums expected to hit the low 20s on Saturday.
