THE exaggerated elation by the bowler in taking a wicket and the group exuberance of the fielding team is unbecoming in a game of cricket, and more so in a Test Match. The dismissed batsman accepts his fate, but the fielding side’s jubilation is most out of place.

I AM appalled by the response of Nuatali Nelmes regarding John Church on his rightful reaction to the abusive incident at the council workshop on Saturday (‘Swear blind’, Newcastle Herald 5/2), as are many others I have spoken with. I believe Newcastle would benefit by having more councillors of the calibre of John Church and Kath Elliot.

MANY, many thanks to the digital edition support from the Herald for their help in transferring the digital newspaper on to my iPhone. It was wonderful to be able to read the local news daily on a recent overseas trip. It’s no wonder the Herald is the top regional newspaper in Australia.

IN the 2011 state election I voted Liberal for the first time, for Andrew Cornwell, because Labor don’t care about the Newcastle cash cow. After the way that worked out, I have not voted Liberal since. They announce their candidates only weeks before election (‘Liberals show their hand’, Herald 5/2). I don’t know them. Shows the Libs still don’t care and are untrustworthy. Labor are going green and mouldy, nothing has changed. We are taken for granted. I trust none of them, but I will always exercise my right to vote.

IN reply to Chris McLauchlan's letter (Short Takes 5/2) who claims the Labor Party has not won an election for 28 years without Greens support. I question your statistics Chris, and would ask you to delve into the past electoral history of the Liberal Party over the years. Without massive assistance from the previous Country Party and now the Nationals, would we have seen Liberal governments in power? I doubt it.

DAVID Shoebridge is absolutely right in pointing out the danger of allowing private approval agents to oversee building standards (‘Private certifiers must go’, Herald 6/2), but why not go further and condemn the other privateers? Private migration agents, some even unregistered, have been ripping off those seeking visas for more than a decade, but nothing has been done.

SOMEBODY should tell the ubiquitous Clive Palmer it's a long way to go before the federal election and haranguing us from our TV screens is more likely to kill the goose than bring home the bacon.

ARE the Newcastle Knights in better or worse shape now than during last year's pre-season?
