The topic of chiropractic treatment can be a divisive one, - there's those that do and those that don't. Yet as we become better educated about how we take care of our bodies, more people are tuning into the noise about chiro and what it can do.
Dr Tim Shakespeare of Life Rebel Chiropractic in Carrington, says it's not unusual for people to learn about it from friends and family, particularly in the case of children.
"We are usually the last resort for parents who have exhausted other methods and don't want to head down the route of having their children using prescription medication or surgical intervention.
"It's natural that people will feel comfortable trying something new if they've heard of others having success with it."
Children account for about 25 per cent of Tim's patients, from babies to teens and present with a range of issues from colic and reflux in babies to bed wetting, behavioural issues, allergies and sleep disturbances.
By using gentle pressure to realign the spine, the nerve pathways are opened, enabling the child's brain to transmit messages clearly. What happens is any obstructions that may be preventing the body's ability to function are removed, allowing it to in effect, heal itself.
Babies that have experienced a difficult arrival into the world can often have imbalances in the spine. A study published in the Chiropractic Journal of Australia took data from 176 infants under 112 days old and found that vacuum-assisted delivery and caesarean section deliveries were associated with “a higher prevalence of reduced cervical spine range of motion, when compared to those born naturally.
So if you consider that the spine is the highway for communication between the body and the brain, keeping it in good shape makes sense.
"As children invariably go through the early stage of life with inevitable bumps and falls and then enter the world of poor posture induced technology, the spine can be compromised on a daily basis, adds Tim.
"Taking care of it from a young age, just the same way we encourage our kids to eat well and exercise, is another way to ensure they stay healthy."
