MAUREEN O’Sullivan Davidson (Letters 16/3): not another environmental impact study, surely? All the studies in the world will not change the climate or weather patterns. As far as science is concerned with the weather, I'm yet to see a scientist, their studies or their recommendations have any impact on the climate whatsoever. I believe history and mathematics is the only guide to our cooling planet.

IT beggars belief to think that people of this region think that they can trust Jodi McKay with the announcement of the proposed upgrade of the Nelson Bay Road ('Labor pledges $600m for Port road overhaul', Newcastle Herald 13/3). It was Ms McKay who said a second crossing was not necessary across the Hunter River to Kooragang Island. Look at the road now that it was built under a Liberal government. To promise more money if re-elected for a second term needs to treated with contempt and an insult to the people of this area. She obviously has no idea of what the people who live in this area need. She only pops her head up when an election is in the air.

FOR the comedy teams on the Sky News channel to insinuate that George Pell did not get a fair trial is beyond belief. If this man who had powerful friends in very high places, enough money to buy the very best defence representation of any in the country and a big support team behind him could not ensure a fair and just trial, then all of us mortals have no chance and we should all just give up on the justice system. Besides being a slap in the face to victims and throwing doubt on the system, I believe it is unprofessional and they should be pulled into line.

AUSTRALIA needs an industrial relations overhaul and this is the plan: the minimum wage rises to $23 per hour. Every worker has the opportunity for full time employment. Casual work will only apply to workers who request it. All workers receive full entitlements such as sick leave, holiday pay, long service leave and employer super contributions at correct rate. Penalty rates will apply to all workers. Day shift is paid at a normal rate, afternoon shift 115 per cent, night shift 130 [er cent. Weekend penalty rates are an extra 15 per cent on Saturdays and 30 per cent Sundays. Loading of 18 per cent will apply to all holiday pay. The equation is simple: the more money in workers pockets, the more they will spend. An alternative plan would be to scrap the GST and other excise and leave the system as it is. The federal government cannot have it both ways.
