The property was once a cattle farm, and the first vines were planted four decades ago.

Current owners Venus and Sylvia Lianto bought the vineyard five years ago, bringing new life to the vines and olive grove, and opening a cellar door.

Sitting in what was originally the cow shed and oozing with rustic charm, the cellar door is open seven days, 10am-5pm.

“The space has a real family atmosphere, as well as space for quiet and romantic escapes, and we try and give visitors the whole experience," cellar door manager Ken Hutchinson said.

"We love to teach people the history of the valley and the wines.

“We cater to everyone with our tastings, from lighter styles right through to our heavier reds.

"People can sit and relax on the veranda, overlooking our vines, the beautiful old rose garden, and the koi fish pond."

And visitors to Hanging Tree Wines are often greeted by the property’s most famous resident.

“We’re renowned for our labrador, named Vodka. He’s the most photographed thing at Hanging Tree,”  Ken said.

“While he loves helping out during harvest, Vodka’s more keen on stealing the grapes.”

The winery is also pet and kid-friendly, with plenty of space, giant chess and other games, not to mention a pony.

Across 40 acres, Hanging Tree Wines grow semillon, chardonnay, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon.

Working with three winemakers, they release a wide range of wines, including award-winning drops, using grapes from the vineyard and the surrounding area.

Grape picking has just finished up for 2018, and Ken said the reds are particularly worth mentioning.

“The shiraz is looking amazing, we’re really pleased with it.

“And we’re just starting to release our 2017 reds, and they’re outstanding.”

The beautiful surrounds have meant the vineyard is a popular spot for weddings, photo shoots and they've also had band CD launches there.

You can also book a getaway on the vineyard itself, with the Hanging Tree Homestead sleeping up to eight people across four spacious bedrooms and bathrooms.

The luxury accommodation boasts a huge wrap-around veranda, fully equipped kitchen, sunrooms, and double fireplace for the cooler months.
